All Profits to Charity
Newman’s Own is a unique business model by which 100% of net royalties and profits are donated to charity. One of the priorities of Newman’s Own is the support of organizations that assist children with life-limiting conditions, such as the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps. The camps provide a safe environment for children with serious illnesses to fully participate in adaptive activities with their peers. There, they experience success, learn new skills, make friends, and can just “be kids” – at no cost to any of the children or families who participate.
|Hole in the Wall CampsPaul Newman always enjoyed visiting the Hole in the Wall Camps he founded and supported: "Whenever I’m in the dumps I come up here, to camp, and it reaffirms everything that I think is really good and generous about this world."|
The purpose of the events was to help raise the profile of these worthwhile charities and as a consequence, cultivate new donors, fundraise, and elevate their status in the community. In this regard, the relationship between donor and grantee has been regarded a success. The aim of Newman’s Own is not to be the primary support for the camps, but to be a partner – at times to mentor, to connect people in meaningful working relationships, and to help them be more effective in reaching their goals and fulfilling their mission.
Dynamo in Tuscany, Italy, serves as an international model for philanthropic outreach. Besides holding annual retreats that bring children together from around the Middle East (Jordan, Syria, Iraq), Dynamo will host the 2011 UNESCO Youth Leadership Forum. This event, supported by Newman’s Own Foundation, provides a space for young people to network and learn to actively engage in human rights activities.
Newman’s Own also takes pride in the service work of its employees. Foundation staff volunteer at the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp once a year to organize supplies, clean up, paint and complete other important tasks. Most Newman’s Own employees serve in other ways as well, whether at the camps or in their community, and they receive accolades in the staff newsletter for their initiative.
