ESG and the Earnings Call: Integrating Long-Term Thinking into Short-Term Discussions
While a traditional earnings call focuses on quarterly financial results, investors and issuers alike understand that longer-term strategic content, including ESG content, can also be critical to understand a company’s outlook and strategy, and that ESG performance can directly impact financial performance. How can issuers begin to include this type of content into the traditional quarterly call format, and should they? Issuers such as the US’s Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) have begun experimenting with building elements of ESG-type disclosures into earnings call content. We will speak with Anthony Di Meo, Senior Director, Investor Relations, BD and with Brian Tomlinson, Director of Research, CEO Investor Forum, Chief Executives for Corporate Purpose (CECP) on this topic to hear their views. Our discussion will explore CECP’s recent paper ESG and the Earnings Call, Communicating Sustainable Value Quarter-by-Quarter and the work that companies like BD are doing to align their long term strategy with their traditional disclosure.
